The S&D Group today called for « serious and targeted » sanctions against the Syrian regime and for the suspension of negotiations over an EU-Syria Association Agreement.

Said S&D Group vice-president Véronique De Keyser: « We strongly condemn the brutal crackdown against protesters in Syria with hundreds killed and arrested. Ignoring people’s legitimate demands and using violence against peaceful demonstrators is unacceptable and leads nowhere.

« In a resolution last month, the European Parliament called on the EU and its member states to take events in Syria into full consideration in bilateral relations with the country, including the suspension of further negotiations over the EU-Syria Association Agreement.

« The S&D Group also welcomes the UN Human Rights Council resolution condemning the Syrian government’s violence against peaceful demonstrators and sending a fact-finding mission to the country.

« However, the time has come to go beyond these measures. The EU must impose serious and targeted sanctions on the Syrian leadership and regime. The massacre of innocent people must end. »
