EU urged to back democracy movements in Bahrain, Syria and Yemen

7 avril 2011

People from Syria, Bahrain and Yemen who are fighting for fundamental human rights, dignity, transparency and democracy must be helped now by the European Union and its member states, say Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament.

S&D vice-president Véronique De Keyser said: « The European Union must strongly support peaceful democratic aspirations of people in Bahrain, Syria and Yemen and review its policies towards these countries now.

She added that EU member states should respect the EU code of conduct on arms exports to these countries and stand ready to help implement concrete political, economic and social reform agendas.

Said Ms De Keyser: « We call on the governments of Bahrain, Syria and Yemen to engage in an open and meaningful political process and dialogue without delay or preconditions.  All democratic political forces and civil society should take part, to pave the way for genuine democracy, the lifting of the state of emergency, and the implementation of real and significant political, economic, and social reforms.  This is essential for long-term stability and development.

« The EU and its member states must take full account of developments in Bahrain, Syria and Yemen in talks with these countries.  Action should include suspension of talks on the Association Agreement between the EU and Syria.

“We strongly believe that signing such an agreement should depend on the will of the Syrian authorities to stop the violent repression of citizens immediately and the carrying out of the tangible democratic reforms that are expected.”
