Protect and save Libyan people now

21 mars 2011

Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcome the UN Security Council resolution 1973 on Libya, considering its imminent application absolutely essential.

Said Martin Schulz, leader of the European Parliament’s main progressive group, the 186-strong Socialists and Democrats:

« The S&D Group welcomes the fact that two key preconditions it had set down for action in Libya – international legitimacy by UN approval and involvement of the Arab League – have been met.

« The UN Security Council resolution on Libya gives the opportunity for legal international action in order to save Libyan people from Gaddafi’s brutality.  It is of paramount importance to act to protect and save Libyan people now.

« The first steps of the implementation of the resolution must be closely coordinated with Libya’s immediate neighbours. We demand that the announced ceasefire will be fully respected.

« The European Union and its Member States, with the involvement of Arab countries, must act on the new UNSC resolution provisions immediately.

« We reiterate our call on the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, to continue her efforts to ensure coherent EU action and to urgently plan the use of CSDP assets in order to contribute to the enforcement of the Security Council Resolution and to ensure continuing humanitarian assistance to the Libyan population. »
