Buzek on the demonstrations in Egypt

26 janvier 2011

Jerzy Buzek, the President of the European Parliament, made the following statement on the demonstrations in Egypt:

« My thoughts are with the Egyptian people and I have been following the events of the past months with deep concern. I deeply regret the three deaths during yesterday’s protests and I convey my condolences to their families and friends.

I call to all parties for restraint, so that the people can exercise their rights and fundamental freedoms in dignity, voicing their hopes without further loss of life. The authorities have today a unique opportunity to truly respond to the grievances of the Egyptian people. They should embrace people’s legitimate aspirations – social and political – for more freedom, pluralism and democracy.

This opportunity was not fully seized in the run-up to the parliamentary elections last year, and it is our hope and expectation, which we share with the Egyptian people, that the presidential elections of this year will truly answer the call of the people.

Egypt is a close neighbour to the EU and will always be an important partner. As in the past, the EU is ready to accompany Egypt on the path to economic, social and political reforms. We will work with the Egyptian authorities and seek to ensure that the voice of the people is heard. »
