Buzek on the parliamentary elections in Egypt

30 novembre 2010

« Egypt is a key political partner for the EU and is a fundamental player in the Middle East. »

« If one claims that the time is not ripe for democracy, people might start thinking that the right time shall never arrive. »

Following yesterday’s parliamentary elections in Egypt, the President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek stated: »Egypt is a key political partner for the EU and is a fundamental player in the Middle East. A democratic Egypt is in the interests first and foremost of its citizens. For the EU a democratic Egypt is as important as a stable Egypt.

I deplore the tense climate in which yesterday’s election took place and which led to the reported death of two people.

Democracy might not necessarily lead to the endorsement of progress and modernity, but democracy still is an endorsement to freedom. And if one claims that the time is not ripe for democracy, people might start thinking that the right time shall never arrive.

I urge the Egyptian authorities and the new members of the Parliament to relax the conditions for political participation: Egypt needs to start developing genuine party politics. The respect for the rule of law should also be strengthened so as to give greater guarantees to candidates and to civil society.

The freedom of press should also be respected and reinforced: the Egyptian authorities should defend dissenting voices as much as friendly ones.

The next elections should be seen as an opportunity to reform the political system making it more accessible, transparent and pluralist. An invitation to international observers to monitor the next elections would be a welcomed opening ».
