Progressive Euro MPs condemn killings off Gaza

31 mai 2010

Leading Euro MPs today condemned the reported killing of about 15 people in Israeli commando raids on ships carrying aid to the Gaza Strip.

Martin Schulz, who heads the European Parliament’s main progressive group, the 184-strong Socialists and Democrats, said: « The use of lethal force against civilians on these ships is unacceptable. Israel has crossed a line in the military action shown on our television screens today ».

« We now demand safeguards for the people who have been taken into captivity by Israeli forces. The international community must hold an inquiry and make its revulsion clear to the Israeli authorities. »

Said Group vice-president Véronique de Keyser, who is responsible for humanitarian policy, and who returned on Friday from a delegation to Gaza: « We must now require Israel to lift the blockade of Gaza completely. This incident has taken us to a point of no return. »

Group vice-president for foreign policy, Adrian Severin, joined the condemnation. He said: « A policy of force is not going to offer any solution but will increase these humanitarian tragedies and national insecurity for Israelis and Palestinians alike. »
