The EU-funded programme “Enhancing Equality between Men and Women in the Euromed Region” is holding a round table in order to examine and validate the results of the analyses carried out on the situation of women in each of the Partner Countries, setting priorities to ensure equality between men and women and fight against violence based on gender.    An announcement said the meeting, to be held in Brussels from 15 to 17 March 2010, will gather the representatives of the nine Partner Countries of the South Mediterranean as well as representatives of EU member states, representatives of the EU Presidency and the Union of the Mediterranean, representatives of ministries and institutions and international organisations in charge of Gender-related related issues as well as other key players with expertise in the region.   Nine national reports on the situation of women in each country will be presented at the event. Each report includes a diagnosis of the condition of women in the country and an outline of the main agencies involved in the issue. Priority issues to be resolved are addressed in line with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the recommendations of the Ministerial Conference in Istanbul 2006 on « Strengthening the Role of Women in Society”.   These reports allow the assessment of the legal and judicial framework of each country and their dynamics through the efforts engaged in terms of strengthening human rights in general and those of women in particular. They also include a part dedicated to boosting CEDAW and ensuring the implementation of the follow-up to the Istanbul process.

The overall reading of the reports allows the evaluation of the opportunities available in the region to achieve equality between men and women. It also reveals the obstacles that arise and helps set priorities for intervention.   Enhancing Equality between Men and Women in the EuroMed Region is funded by the EU with a budget of €4.5 million under the European Neighborhood Policy. It aims at promoting three main priorities: support to the current dynamics that favour gender equality and promote women’s rights, and to the full implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and related instruments; contributing to increased knowledge of gender-based violence and support to actions addressing its occurrence and its root causes; and backing the follow-up of the conclusions and the action framework of the Istanbul Ministerial conference on Strengthening the Role of Women in Society.   Announcement (FR)   Gender Equality Programme – The situation of women in nine countries (FR)   Gender Equality Programme – fiche and news   Gender Equality Programme – website   Eurojar interview with Judith Neisse   ENPI Info Centre gender webpage
