The European Parliament in session today in Strasbourg has had a debate and has also voted the reports on the EU membership candidates, including the Turkey’s progress report for 2009.

During the debate and the discussion of the report, the S&D Group have remained pro-accession and pro-reform for Turkey, and have standed convinced that both Europe and Turkey must stand true to their promises for progress.

Said Richard Howitt S&D Group Shadow Rapporteur on Turkey: « We expect our Turkish counterparts to continue to make audacious changes in their own society with sometimes difficult impacts on their domestic politics. These reforms are good in their own right, but, those of us who say in this Parliament we want accession: we have to make their efforts worthwhile by ourselves doing what we say, opening and closing chapters on merit, delivering the promises of the European Council, ourselves acting in good faith« .

Said Adrian Severin Vice-President of the S&D Group: « In order for European commitments to be kept, we urge Turkish authorities to accelerate the speed of the reforms process so that the State is able to fully comply with all of the Copenhagen criteria. Reforms must continue and accelerate in the area of the judiciary, freedom of expression, punishment of human rights violations. It is also necessary to strengthen the anticorruption strategy« .
