EU Special Representative for the Southern Mediterranean

The Council adopted a decision appointing Bernardino León Special Representative for the Southern Mediterranean, a new post created in the wake of the recent developments in the Arab world as part of the EU’s efforts to support the democratic transformation of its Southern neighbourhood and develop a new partnership with the region.

The decision sets out the EUSR’s mandate, based on the EU’s policy objectives for the Southern Neighbourhood. The Special Representative will strengthen the EU’s overall political role vis-a-vis the countries of the Southern Mediterranean, through enhanced dialogue with governments, international organisations and civil society and by maintaining close contacts with all parties involved in the process of democratic transformation.
